A Culinary Adventure Through Prague's Best Food and Beer

Prague was one of the first places I wanted to visit. Others we've met here have recommended it, and as you might guess, we prefer the eastern part of Europe.

We only spent a long weekend in prague but we always make the most of these cities. Walking all over the cities, seeing most of the sites but really just following our nose and seeing where things take us.

Prague is definitely a place I recommend and a place I would love to go back to and venture beyond the city into Czechia aka Czech Republic.

The anticipation for Prague started when we were waiting to board our plane from Madrid to Prague. There was a group of 6-8 guys, one of whom was blindfolded, had headphones on, and was dressed up as Ash Ketchum from Pokémon. They drank during the flight and were clearly a bachelor party. From that point on, I think we saw at least 3 different bachelor party groups per day while there.

Despite it being what seems like a European stag party hub, it still has the historic European charm, and you would never guess people go there to party.

Beer and Food

Prague is, without a doubt, famous for its beer, and I have to say, it is exceptional. What amazed me about the beer there is its simplicity. I enjoy German beer and have traveled throughout Germany, as well as Switzerland and Poland, exploring new beers and checking out what's available on the menu.

In Prague, basically, you just tell them if you want a pilsner or a dark beer. That's it. Simplicity.

We went to a few restaurants where they give you a card, sometimes at a shared picnic table, and somebody is going around with a tray full of pints of beer and he asks "light or dark" and gives you one and marks your sheet. Another person went around with shots of either a strong wine or aperitif, but they were always circling.

There are multiple cafeteria-style locations where you place your order, and they mark your card. You can then browse and select whatever you like, including drinks. When you're ready to leave, simply head out and pay as you exit.

I absolutely love this system. I've mentioned in the past how much we love the pub system where you head to the bar, order your food and drink, and pay right away so you can just leave. It's very much the opposite of here in Spain, where it could take 45 minutes just to get a check.

Meat is the name of the game in in Prague. The different cuts, ways of preperation and diversity of meats they have everywhere was great. We love being able to pick 1-2 meats, pick which sides we want and not rely on preset menu that often times lacks vegetables.

So yea, the food and drink in Prague gets high marks from us.

As with most European cities, if you wake up early, and I only mean before 9 am, you can explore the squares and have them all to yourself.

I dont have a lot of specific highlights, we quite literally just wandered around all of the city. If you walk down by the water they have these cool small bars and cafes that are essentially under the supports for the road overhead but have these giant circular doors.

And as usual, we saw lots of playgrounds. Prague gets decent marks for their playgrounds. One specifically cool one behind a church made all of wood and looked like its own mini village.

So when you go to Prague, just wander around the city and eat at as many places as you can.

I wish we had climbed at least one of the towers surrounding the city. In the old town area, there are about 5 or 6 of the original towers encircling it, and most of them are accessible for climbing. One or two even feature restaurants and a hidden whiskey bar.

It's not without its flaws, and there are certainly lots of scams, like with most cities. But I highly recommend watching a YouTube channel, The Honest Guide, whose creators are native there and not only do a lot of entertaining anti-scammer videos, but also have guides and maps with their recommendations on places to eat and things to do.

Quick Tips

  • Enjoy the simplicity of the beer culture

  • embrace the cafateria style dining. Once you do it you will have the hang of it.

  • get up before 9 am to have the streets to yourself.
